"When
Margaretha Maimone stages a chamber music concert, musicians without a keen sense of
adventure need not apply -- that goes for audiences, too." -- Barbara DeLatiner, The New York
Times
Established in 1984 by Margaretha Maimone
and friends in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Ridotto offers concerts with a touch of theater
on Long Island as a colorful and intelligent alternative to the tradition concert stage.
Highlights of past seasons include:
Igor Stravinsky, The Early Years; with
the trio " The Soldiers Tale", and a pantomine on "Renard".
Armida, a fully staged opera
by Josef Hadyn.
Music and Laughter in Shakespeare's
Time, with music for voices and lute, poetry and theatre.
Passion and Pride, a program
with Spanish music and a Lorca play with the use of marionettes and actors;
The Cry of the Gypsy, with gypsy influences on chamber music and a
Flamenco dance.
Little Giovanni, the travels of a Renaissance artist;
Satie and Cocteau, Paris in the 1900s with a short film by Rene
Clair.
Elgar and Hardy on two great British Victorians in music and in poetry;
Theme programs centered around the music of Mozart, Chopin, Beethoven, Schubert, and
Brahms.
All of these were hailed as intriguing and
rich music programs. Now in its 10th year on Long Island, Ridotto has made its mark on classical music offerings.
"An energetic,
inventive ensemble such as this can only enrich the community where it appears."
-- Peter Goodman, Newsday
